TESTS
Write sentences using than and rather than, e.g.:
I'd prefer to stay at home tonight rather than go to the cinema.

VOCABULARY
Сегодня поговорим "о нервах", вернее, о выражениях, основанных на слове "nerve", которых в английском, как и в русском, довольно много.
1. to unnerve
- нервировать; расстраивать; лишать присутствия духа; лишать силы или решимости; лишать спокойствия; лишать мужества (словарь МУЛЬТИТРАН)
- to deprive of fortitude, strength, or firmness of purpose; to make nervous or upset. (словарь Dictionary.com)

1.1. Danbert was having trouble concentrating on the road. The constant chattering of his unwanted passenger was unnerving him.

1.2. "Sarah, why don't you just get rid of it?" She asked her stepdaughter. Sarah shrugged and shook her head. "You need to decide soon," Karen continued. "I don't like having that thing in my kitchen. It's unnerving."
to shrug - пожимать плечами
Sarah could understand that. After last night, she felt more than a little uneasy around the owl. In fact, she felt afraid. He had seemed so... scared and helpless before. Well, scared he still was, helpless he was not. He had no way of taking care of himself, but that didn't make him any less dangerous. She had been stupid to think otherwise. He was not the cute, cuddly creature she had deluded herself into thinking he was. She knew better now.
uneasy - беспокойный, тревожный
helpless - беспомощный, беззащитный
cute - остроумный, находчивый, милый
cuddly - приятный, привлекательный,
to delude - вводить в заблуждение
But if she turned him over to Dr. Trapp, he'd be destroyed. And she couldn't just let him go in his condition. He had no way of surviving on his own; he'd die for sure.
Sarah sighed. She didn't want to take care of him anymore. He was too wild, too dangerous. He didn't understand that she was only trying to help him. He would probably attack her again, especially now that he'd been caged. He would be more irritable as a result of his confinement, and more inclined to lash out. But what choice did she really have? If she didn't help him, he would die.
to sigh - вздыхать
to cage - сажать в клетку
confinement - одно из значений "тюремное заключение"
to lash out - наброситься
"I know it's unnerving..." Sarah sighed. "I... I need to think about it, Karen." She turned away and slowly headed upstairs for a shower.

2. to lose one's nerve - оробеть; потерять самообладание

2.1. "Now we knew the secret - that the parasites lost their nerve in outer space - we could destroy thousands of them a day." [1]

2.2. One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.
She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."
He said..... "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.
He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.
She read these words.....
"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

3. to get on (someone's) nerves - to irritate or exasperate (exasperate = раздражать, изводить, бесить)
4. strain every nerve = to make every effort - стараться изо всех сил; из кожи вон вылезти; напрягать все силы; прилагать все усилия
5. nerves of steel - "стальные", крепкие нервы

6. Rabbit glared at Tiger "You've got a lot of nerve showing up here after what you did to Eeyore. I think Tigger should leave. [2]"
glared- здесь: уставляться взглядом (часто злым); пристально смотреть

GRAMMAR
"I'd rather you did smth
When you want somebody to do something, you can say "I'd rather you did something":

"Shall I stay here?" "I'd rather you came with us"
"Shall I tell them the news?" "No. I'd rather they didn't know."
"Shall I tell them or would you rather they didn't know?"

In this structure we use the past (came, did etc.), but the meaning is present or future, not past.
Compare:
I'd rather cook the dinner now.
but I'd rather you cooked the dinner now. (not "I'd rather you cook")

The negative is "I'd rather you didn't ...."
I'd rather you didn't tell anyone what I said.
"Do you mind if I smoke?" "I'd rather you didn't""[3]

“Я бы хотел у вас спросить вашего мнения: используется или нет артикль перед словом Украина в английском языке. Eсли да, то почему? The Ukraine or Ukraine?”
Приведено довольно пространное доказательство того, что любой однозначный ответ на этот вопрос может быть ошибочен. Найден и обоснован оригинальный выход из этой непростой ситуации.
