Продвинутый English

A warm welcome to all subscribers! Здравствуйте, уважаемые подписчики!
Выпуск #123
"ПРОДВИНУТЫЙ ENGLISH" 22.06.06
Еженедельный электронный журнал для изучающих английский язык

Good time of the day to everyone. I hope you are alive and kicking and ready for grammar.
The "notes in Syntax" are kindly provided by Dr.Peter Ortutay

1.1.REQUESTS AND COMMANDS (IMPERATIVE MOOD)
The simple form of the verb is used for requests, commands, or instructions.
Open the door.
Don’t open the door.
Let’s open the door.
Let’s not open the door. (Here the request takes the form of a suggestion).

An adverb may precede the imperative mood.
Always open that door slowly.
Don’t ever open the door.

Formulas of politeness such as please, will (or would), often accompany requests.

1.2. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES
Exclamations may begin with what or how.

What – a noun end the exclamatory phrase.
What a delicious fruit this is!
What delicious pineapples these are!
What delicious pineapple this is!

How – an adjective or adverb ends the exclamatory phrase.
How graceful she is!
How gracefully she dances!
Note: An exclamatory sentence may end with a full stop – What delicious food this is.
The full stop lessens the impact of the exclamation.

The subject and the verb in an exclamatory sentence retain normal word order except in poetic or literary style – How beloved is she!

If you are not alive and kicking anymore, then perhaps the following joke will help to cheer you up:

Husband and wife were sitting in their house when the wife looked at her husband and asked, "When I die would you remarry?"
The husband replied, "I don't want to talk about this, it's to depressing."
Then the wife said, "Just tell me. I really have to know."
So he replied, "Well, you would be gone, and I'd be here alone. So I guess I would."
Then she asked, "Would you move her into our house?"
He said, "Well you'd be gone, and I'd be here alone, and there isn't any sense in buying a new home. So yes, I guess I would."
Then she asked, "Would you let her sleep in my bed?"
He said, "Well, I guess I would, because you'd be gone, and there isn't any sense in buying a new bed. So yes, I'd let her sleep in our bed."
Then she asked, "Would you let her use my golf clubs?"
Then the husband says: "God, no! She's left handed!"

We'd be pleased if you let us know whether the grammar tests are necessary in the ezine - we used to have them last year.
