As there was a great opportunity for you men as well as you women to watch these World Cup matches in TV, let the joke go.

It is just before the Australia v Brazil match.
Ronaldinho goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his teammates looking a bit glum [glum - moody and melancholy; dejected] .
"What's up?" he asks. [What's up? INFORMAL used to ask someone what the problem is]
"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's important but it's only Australia. They're sh*te and we can't be bothered".
Ronaldinho looks at them and says "Well, I reckon I can beat them by myself, you lads go down the pub." [(all) by yourself - alone or without help from anyone else]
So Ronaldinho goes out to play Australia by himself and the rest of the Brazilian team go off for a few jars.
After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the teletext on.
A big cheer goes up as the screen reads "Brazil 1 - Australia 0 (Ronaldinho 10 minutes)".
He is beating Australia all by himself!
Anyway, a few pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on". They put the teletext on.
"Result from the Stadium "Brazil 1 (Ronaldinho 10 minutes) - Australia 1 (Kewell 89 minutes)".
They can't believe it; he has single handedly got a draw against Australia!! [single-handedly - without assistance]
They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate Ronaldinho. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sitting with his head in his hands.
[gear - clothing and accessories]
He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down."
"Don't be daft! You got a draw against Australia, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very, very end!" [daft - mad; crazy; foolish; stupid].
"No, No, I have! I've let you down...........I got sent off after 12 minutes"

A huge thank-you goes to Peter, a retired teacher of English, professor of linguistics, who sent some comments on the joke:
"I liked the anecdote. You made me laugh. Ronaldinho is a swell player indeed. [Swell adj (US infml) 1 fashionable or smart: You look swell in that dress! 2 excellent; first rate: a swell vacation, player, guy * That's swell! = First rate. ]

I would say "Ronaldinho goes into the changing room and finds..." instead of 'to find'. Infinitive phrases after verbs (.eg. He went to see him = He went there because he wanted to see him) usually function as adverbials (of purpose) in a sentence. Why does he go there? To find ... Do you really want an adverbial here?
We are having trouble ... Suggestion: We are in a bit of trouble. We somehow lack motivation to the game (with these Aussies).
Is the word sh*t (shit)? If so, no silent 'e' is needed at the end. And why not to use the word in its full form? It is no longer obscene, just slangy. In American films every second word is 'sh*t' (and asshole). It is in the dictionaries, too.
Suggestion: ...so you, lads, just go down to the pub and have a pint or two.
Before the (coordinating) conjunction 'and ' it is advisable to use a comma, but it always depends (on what you want to emphasize, for instance).

My comment: Poor Ronaldinho. He let them down indeed."
