Dear subscribers!

Here are some brief explanations for the usage of the words aboard, onboard and on board, as even native speakers of English often use these words incorrectly. Consider the template phrase below:

"is thrilled to have * on board"
Correct. Google returns over 85M results for this phrase.
"is thrilled to have * aboard"
Correct. Google returns over 6M results for this phrase.
"is thrilled to have * onboard"
Incorrect. Google returns less than 900K results for this phrase.

Why is the last one incorrect? Let's explore a little.

The words "on board" and "onboard" convey different meanings and perform different functions in a sentence.

On board can be a prepositional phrase, or it can function as an adverb in a sentence. In the above example, on board functions as an adverb rather than a prepositional phrase, meaning to be on a ship (train, plane, bus or any other vehicle), be present, or in agreement. The word "aboard" can be considered a synonym of the word "on board", and the two words can be used interchangeably in most cases.

The word onboard in a sentence can be an adjective or a verb. As an adjective, onboard always comes before the noun it modifies, meaning something integral or attached to another thing, something built-in like an onboard radio, GPS etc. When acting as a verb, onboard means to get started as a new client or employee, often following an induction, training etc. Neither of these cases is relevant to the above example i.e. "onboard" is not intended to convey an action or modify a noun so it should not be used.

I hope the above is useful. If you need more detailed explanations and further examples, please consider reading this article
