Hi there.

The other day I noticed it might take longer than usual to recall what some tiny words mean. The culprit was the word "nan" and the meaning was that of the world "grandmother". Easy. The latter is the word that kids would formally learn in their kindergartens and childcares. Nonetheless, it has led me to look up a dictionary for other three-letter words that may potentially cause problems in the future. I will spread the material across the next few issues and devote this one solely to "nan", "nap" and "nag". Only the more commonly occurred usages will be reviewed.

NAN
1) n. grandmother
(colloq.), i.e. the mother of your father or mother. See also: nana, nanna.
2) n. a kind of Indian bread. See also: naan.

NAP
1) v.  sleep lightly or briefly. n. short sleep or doze, esp. by day; a period of time spent sleeping (there wasn't time for a nap);
sleeping for a short period of time (usually not in bed). See also: catnap, snooze, siesta, drowse, doze, forty winks, cat sleep, short sleep.
2) n.  a soft or fuzzy surface texture; raised pile on textiles, esp. velvet .

NAG
1) v.
bother persistently with trivial complaints (she nags her husband all day long) ; n. someone (especially a woman) who annoys people by constantly finding faultSee also: scold,  grouch, grumble, dress down, bawl out, etc.
2) v. be persistent (of a pain); worry persistently (nagging concerns and doubt).
3) v. remind or urge constantly (she nagged to take a vacation).
4) n. an old or over-worked horse.

You may now look through your own dictionaries and see if I missed something important. Please let me know on eenglishproo@mail.ru if I did. Thanks.

Warmly,
Andrey Kostenko
