Выпуск #119
"ПРОДВИНУТЫЙ ENGLISH" 19.01.06
Еженедельный электронный журнал для изучающих английский язык

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
The world is governed more by appearances than realities, so that it is fully as necessary to seem to know something as to know it.
Daniel Webster (1782 - 1852)

CORRECTIONS&VOCABULARY

The inaccuracy regarding the use of preposition "with" together with the verb "congratulate" was deliberately allowed to occur in issue #119.
Unfortunately, to date we received no messages questioning this error. We'd like to appeal to our readers to be more active.

The most natural and correct preposition to use here is "on":
The whole country congratulated Vladimir on his new appointment.

Other prepositions appear, however the meaning of the expression has nothing to do with "to congratulate someone on something",
for example:

"I congratulate with all my heart ..."or
"We'd like to congratulate you with this lovely basket filled with wonderful wedding gifts."

Let's repeat the use of "married on/to/with"&"work on/with". There are plenty of examples on the Internet:

They were married on August 11, 1960 in Shamrock.
Keith is married to Gail, with 3 children and 2 grandchildren.
Married to Bobbie, with 3 children & 3 step-children.

Bill went to work on the project with his usual enthusiastic style.
During a 25-month study period, over 5 million man-hours had been worked on the project with only three reportable injuries.
Walch worked on the project with Steve Coon, currently at the National Institutes of Health, who continues to work on the project.

If there is anything confusing about 'congratulate/married/work on/to/with', please let us know.

FEEDBACK

We received several answers to the question: "Is it possible to use the word Eve in plural?"
Some of them said, "Is it possible..". While some others said,"It is not possible".

The best explanation was given by Ilya:

"I believe technically you can say:
Of all the Christmas EveS that I've ever had this one is the best.

But perhaps you'd sooner hear:
This is the best Christmas Eve I've ever had."

Google.com gives about 25900 results for "Christmas Eves":

Scrooge is visited, on Christmas Eve, by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley who died seven Christmas Eves ago.

or:
A few New Years Eves ago, we had a party at my mates house, to which all of the close mates where invited.

And:
The word eve has several senses. As a chiefly poetic or literary form of evening, the word can indeed form a plural:

Thunderstorms on hot summer eves
Bring back flashes of flickering
Firefights in the distant green hills.
(By Ken Newberry)

There is a story going around about Adam and Eve. According to this story Eve was first.
She was there in the Garden of Eden and she was bored. She was all by herself, except for the snake who was a lousy companion. She was tired of eating apples. God could see she was bored. God said there was a solution.
God was actually thinking about it. God would create another human. This human would be different.
It would be called Man; It would be sort of rude and slow, but it would also be strong and fast and would provide food and build shelter. There was something else, God said.
Man would have a very sensitive ego. So, God said, it would be a good idea to let Man think he had come first.
It will be our secret, God said to Eve, it will be just between us women. ( from sermons )
